Certificate of Insurance Explained for Contractors

If you're a contractor in Dallas, you've been asked for a Certificate of Insurance (COI). Here's everything you need to know — what it is, who needs one, and how to get one fast.

What Is a Certificate of Insurance?

A COI is a one-page document that proves you have active insurance coverage. It lists your policy types, limits, effective dates, and the carrier. It does not transfer any coverage — it's just proof.

GCs, property owners, and clients request COIs before letting you on a job site or signing a contract.

    What's on a COI

    • Your business name and address
    • Insurance carrier name and policy number
    • Coverage types: GL, auto, workers comp, umbrella
    • Policy limits (e.g., $1M/$2M GL)
    • Effective and expiration dates
    • Certificate holder (the party requesting it)
    • Additional insured status (if required)

    Additional Insured Endorsements

Most GCs in Dallas require you to add them as an "additional insured" on your GL policy. This extends your coverage to protect them on your jobs. It's a standard endorsement — usually no extra cost.

How Fast Can You Get a COI?

Same day. Once your policy is bound, we issue COIs immediately. Additional insured endorsements are handled same day too. Need one by this afternoon? Call (214) 555-0100.

    Common COI Mistakes

    • Letting policies lapse — automatic cancellation notices go to your certificate holders
    • Not carrying enough limits — most Dallas GCs now require $1M/$2M GL minimum
    • Missing additional insured — delays job starts
    • Wrong business name on the COI — must match your contract exactly
